Whether it’s 90* and sunny, or -9* and blustery – we love to get out and be on the water… even if the water is frozen. This weekend’s weather was fairly reasonable here in northern Michigan, so on Saturday morning, after the temps climbed above 4 degrees we suited up and hit the hills – Hickory Hills that is. Ben gets pulled along in his sled as we snowshoe across the meadow, after a while he asks for a ride on my shoulders.
The really refreshing portion of the weekend, was checking up on Aeolian. She is wrapped under her blue blanket, keeping her from being buried under the snow and exposed to the winds. I took a few moments to sit at the helm and I had a real sense that spring isn’t too far away – we even woke up to the birds chirping this morning.
On Sunday morning we made Valentines. We traced Ben’s hands, which naturally makes a little heart in the middle. Too cute. Watching our son grow up is so rewarding, but sometimes it feels like a blur. Steph and I often joke on how commercial some of the holidays are becoming and how some people have lost touch with the true meaning. We have celebrated 15 years of Valentines Days together this year!
We even had a chance to sneak away this weekend for a day date while Ben entertained his Mimi and Gramps. We went to see the movie Identity Thief… two hours later, we felt that enjoying the peace and quiet of our empty house could have been a better use of our time – maybe they should have called it “Time Thief”.
Our plan for Valentines this year is making a delicious dinner and spending the evening together with Ben. The menu includes grilled mango shrimp served up with Stephanie’s amazing cheesy grits. We’re not going to be tipping any waiters or paying a babysitter, we’re going to enjoy our time together as family playing toys and enjoying some yummy chocolatey brownies.
How about you, did you do any walking on water this weekend? Any special plans for Valentines Day?

Water has always been an important part of our lives as well. It seems where ever we are…. We gravitate towards water.between boats , many years ago, we purchased a motorhome for a change of pace. Well… When we looked for a campground it had to have water and we almost always got a site as close to the water as possible. Sometimes backing up so close to the water that we could hear the waves slapping on the Lake Michigan shoreline ….hmmmm we would have rather been floating in it.
Now my valentine, for 39 years , and I are in-between boats again and contemplating what to do… Motorhome or houseboat ….somewhere warm. Well I know for sure if we get the motorhome first we should probably get an anchor for it….I vote for the houseboat! These northern Michigan winters lead to a whole lot of daydreaming about warm weather and boating… It’s just around the corner… really it is…I say this as I gaze out the window at the frozen lake .
